July 2020

Dear colleagues,

The Black Lives Matter movement has inspired a worldwide response and we support the conversation and effort to address anti-Black systemic racism at UCI and beyond.

I encourage you to explore the resource materials we have put together through the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, including a 24-page report from the Dismantling System Racism Town Hall meeting attended by more than 500 participants.

This meeting spurred the formation of working groups to begin the necessary process of dismantling systemic racism at UCI. I invite you to apply to join a working group to lend your voice, talent, and resolve to become a part of the solution.

I am also pleased to announce that the UCI Brain Initiative has been renewed for a third year of funding. We'd like to thank Interim Provost Dr. Hal Stern for his vision and support for the Initiative.

In the coming year, we will continue to provide grassroots support to interdisciplinary brain research, host engaging workshops & community events, and sponsor educational opportunities for our students, staff, faculty, and community. Dr. Stern congratulated those involved in the Initiative and said, "Bringing together a campuswide network of faculty and researchers focused in the area of neuroscience has been a valuable contribution to campus, and we look forward to seeing continued progress in this area."

To our faculty advisory committee, staff and vibrant community, I would like to say thank you for helping to make UCI a trailblazer in interdisciplinary research, outreach, and education.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Yassa Ph.D.
Director, UCI Brain Initiative
