Dear colleagues,
Those of you who are current SFN members may already know from the election e-mail last week that I’m a candidate for President of SFN. This is a huge honor. The way this happens is that SFN solicits nominations and then a nominating committee made up of highly respected neuroscientists recommends the final candidates. If you’re interested in learning more about how one gets on the ballot or if you’re interested in getting involved in volunteer leadership in SFN, please fill out this interest form. Chris Gall, who has served on SFN Council and as one of the executive officers (Treasurer) and I are considering hosting an information session depending on interest.
I thought you might be interested in a bit of history. UCI’s footprints in SFN leadership are actually pretty remarkable. If you search the history of SFN, you’ll learn that the Society was founded in 1969 by Ralph W. Gerard, who then served as Honorary President. Ralph came to UCI in 1964 when the campus was founded as Professor of Biological Sciences and Dean of the Graduate Division. He played a major role in establishing the Department of Psychobiology. I was fortunate to meet him when I was a graduate student in Psychobiology.
Ted Jones, our former Chair of Anatomy & Neurobiology served as SFN President in 1998-1999, although he had moved to UC Davis by the time he was elected.
Tom Carew served as SFN president from 2008-2009 when he was Chair of our Department of Neurobiology and Behavior.
If elected, I would be the 4th SFN President (out of 52) who is a faculty member in one of UCI’s two neurobiology departments (and in my case, both departments). The only other faculty in the entire UC system who have served as President are Ted Jones and Larry Squire (USCD), who is one of the Founding Fellows of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) at UCI.
It is a huge honor to be nominated, and will be a huge challenge if elected. Fortunately, because of amazing financial management, including under Chris’s term as Treasurer, SFN is well-positioned to survive the unprecedented situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic (not the case with some other professional societies).
Sincerely,
Os Steward, Ph.D.
Professor, Anatomy and Neurobiology
School of Medicine
